France calls for two-state solution, summons Israeli and Palestinian civil

France will organize a meeting with representatives of Israeli and Palestinian civil society in Paris on June 12, with the aim of reaffirming support for the two-state solution and advancing efforts for the recognition and creation of a Palestinian state.

The news was announced by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot in a video message to participants in a meeting of Israeli and Palestinian civil society actors in Tel Aviv.

Barrot described the planned meeting in Paris as "a very important event for peace," emphasizing that it will serve to strengthen international commitment to the two-state solution.

"The meeting will bring together representatives of Israeli and Palestinian civil society to reaffirm our collective commitment to implementing the two-state solution," he declared.

The event comes a year after the launch of the “Paris Appeal” and a year after France and about a dozen other countries recognized the State of Palestine. Barrot described that decision as an important step in support of the peace process.

According to him, the recommendations that will emerge from the Paris meeting will contribute to the discussions of the G7 summit, which France will host this year in Evian.

" We want to create a new call to action to advance the recognition and effective implementation of a Palestinian state," the French minister said.

Barrot also praised the role of civil society in the peacebuilding process, arguing that local organizations and activists have direct knowledge of the reality and challenges faced by both sides.

Discussions ahead of the Paris meeting have focused on five main areas: security for Israelis and Palestinians, humanitarian aid and reconstruction of Gaza, implementation of the two-state solution and opposition to annexation, promotion of narratives in support of peace, and democracy, reforms and regional integration.

The French minister said the work will be based on the principles of the New York Declaration and will help shape future diplomatic initiatives.

"The challenge is great: to enable two states, Israel and Palestine, to live side by side in peace and security," Barrot declared, adding that France will continue to cooperate with both sides to support peace efforts in the region.
