Iran demands Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon, Hezbollah rejects deal; IDF

The commander of the Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Esmail Qaani, has stated that in order to reach a ceasefire with Hezbollah, Israel must withdraw at least to the positions it held before the start of the current war.

The statement comes as the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are conducting their deepest incursion into Lebanese territory since 2000, when they withdrew after a 22-year occupation and settled at the “Blue Line.” Last week, Israeli forces captured Beaufort Castle, the historic strategic fortress near Nabatieh, while intensive airstrikes continued in the area throughout the morning and yesterday.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has described the agreement reached between Israel and the Lebanese government as "shameful." He said the agreement constitutes "surrender and defeat" for Lebanon and that Hezbollah will not accept any plan that aims to "exterminate a part of the Lebanese people."

Qassem reiterated his call for a complete Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, adding that as long as Lebanese villages are bombed and civilians are killed, northern Israel will not be safe. Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militant group, has not been part of the ceasefire talks. The proposed agreement is contingent on Hezbollah stopping attacks on Israel.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has called the deal "the last chance" for all parties, saying that if accepted, the ceasefire could come into effect within 24 hours.

The situation on the ground remains extremely tense, with the parties' positions still far apart: Israel demands complete security on the border, while Hezbollah and its Iranian backers insist on a complete Israeli withdrawal as a necessary condition. Negotiations continue under international pressure, but without Hezbollah's direct involvement, any agreement risks being fragile.
