Thousands of Iranians gathered in Tehran today to commemorate the first supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, on the 37th anniversary of his death. Official ceremonies took place at Khomeini's mausoleum, where participants held portraits of him and chanted revolutionary slogans.
The current Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, in a written statement described his predecessor as "the compassionate father of the nation, the faithful disciple and friend of the Imam's school."

Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has given dramatic details about the assassination of Ali Khamenei during the Israeli and American attacks on February 28. Araghchi said he was in Ali Khamenei's office when the attack occurred.
" When I came out of the rubble, the only thing I could think about was wondering if he had been the target of the attack or not ," Araghchi said in an interview with a Hezbollah-affiliated media outlet.

The regime established by Khomeini's 1979 revolution remains deeply controversial. Although officially glorified as the founder of the Islamic system, it is accused by international critics and a significant portion of Iranians at home and abroad of systematic human rights abuses, repression of dissent, and economic failures. Iran consistently ranks poorly in global indices of democracy and freedom.

Today's commemorations come at a time of high tension for the Islamic Republic, following the loss of a central figure like Ali Khamenei and under pressure from international sanctions and security threats.
