Drones over Brussels airport, Belgian Government calls emergency meeting of

Belgian authorities will hold a meeting of the national security council on Thursday morning, following the closure of Brussels Airport late Tuesday following a drone intrusion, Prime Minister Bart De Wever's office announced today.

De Wever will gather the heads of all police, military and intelligence services, as well as public prosecutors, to discuss the latest drone activity and possible countermeasures.

Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken said today that the drone incident "was not the work of amateurs" and Belgium is investigating whether it can ask neighboring countries for help.

Drones were spotted earlier this month over several Belgian military bases. Francken said it is believed the drones were trying to spy on fighter jets and ammunition depots.

The drone strike caused the cancellation of 28 flights on Tuesday evening; another 54 flights were canceled today at Brussels Airport, affecting 22 departing flights and 32 arriving flights.
