Republican Party Chairman Mike Johnson, accompanied by other Republican lawmakers, spoke about the elections held yesterday in several US states, for mayors and governors, where Democrats won the races.
Johnson downplayed the significance of last night's results, suggesting that Democratic victories in New York, New Jersey and Virginia were expected.
"There were no surprises last night," he says.
"What happened last night was that blue states and blue cities voted blue," he says, referring to the color commonly used to designate the Democratic Party in the US.
He went on to add, "we all saw this happen and no one should give too much importance to the results of last night's election."
The Virginia governor's term switched from an incumbent Republican to a Democrat, as did the seats on the Georgia Public Service Commission.
Johnson reserved his harshest comments for the New York mayor-elect.
"Zohran Mamdani is without a doubt the greatest victory for socialism in the history of the country and the greatest loss for the American people," he says.
