Trump ignores election loss and attacks Democrats: They want to collapse the

President Donald Trump spoke from the White House this morning, ahead of a meeting with Republican senators, where he lashed out at Democrats for blocking the functioning of the federal government.

" They will bring down the country if they have to, just to win politically ," Trump declared, adding that the shutdown is hurting ordinary Americans, from food aid to airlines and the stock market.

The White House chief of staff urged Republicans to take "necessary steps" to end the crisis:

" It's time for Republicans to do what they need to do - lift the filibuster. It's the only way to move forward ," he said.

Trump acknowledged that the government shutdown had a negative impact on the last election, calling the election night "interesting, but not good for Republicans." However, he stressed that he "learned a lot" and that the party must show determination at a time when, according to him, "Democrats are playing with people's lives."

However, the president chose to talk mainly about the government shutdown, largely ignoring the Democrats' victories last night.

In the US Senate, a “filibuster” is a rule that allows for unlimited debate on a bill – effectively blocking a vote if a senator decides to speak without interruption. A filibuster requires a majority of 60 votes to end it, which often prevents legislation from passing if one side refuses to cooperate.

President Trump has called for the removal of this mechanism, which he says is used by Democrats to "paralyze the government" and obstruct Republican policies.

Historically, the filibuster has been used as a powerful political tool. The longest known record is that of Strom Thurmond in 1957, who spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes against a civil rights bill.
