Tens of thousands of Iranian opposition supporters gathered in Berlin today in a large demonstration against the current regime in Iran, expressing solidarity with the ongoing protests and uprising in the country.
The rally, organized by supporters of the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), was held on the anniversary of the revolution that overthrew the Shah's dictatorship, and was intended as a message against any form of dictatorship. Participants called for increased international pressure on the Iranian authorities, while many of them stated that they had family members arrested, disappeared or killed during the recent protests in Iran.
The keynote address at the rally was delivered by Maryam Rajavi, president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). She declared that the fall of the Iranian regime is inevitable and called for recognition of the decades of organized resistance of the Iranian people, emphasizing that political change must come from the citizens of Iran themselves.
The rally also featured prominent international figures. Former European Council President and former Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said the Iranian opposition movement represented a real force for democratic change. Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who addressed the participants via video link, stressed that the Iranian opposition has built a political structure aimed at replacing the current regime with a government that reflects the will of the citizens.
Support was also expressed by former German Minister of Economics and Energy, Peter Altmaier, who mentioned Iranians living inside and outside the country, including members of the opposition based in Ashraf 3 in Albania, emphasizing solidarity with their efforts for democratic change.
For her part, former German Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger praised Maryam Rajavi's ten-point plan for the future of Iran, which provides for freedom of expression, free elections, gender equality, and the separation of religion from the state.
According to the organizers, the rally was supported by hundreds of international human rights organizations, trade unions and political figures from various countries. After the speeches, the participants marched through the main streets of Berlin, holding banners and slogans against the Iranian regime.
Meanwhile, 114 Nobel Prize winners have signed a joint statement condemning the violence against protesters in Iran and expressing support for their demands against the dictatorship, calling on the international community to act more decisively.
