US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said peace talks between US and Ukrainian officials would be a path to leaving the country "sovereign, independent and prosperous".
Speaking as the long-awaited talks began in Florida, Rubio said he expected the talks to yield more progress toward an agreement to end the nearly four-year war.
"This is not just about ending a war. It's about ending a war in a way that creates a mechanism and a path forward that will allow them to be independent and sovereign, never have another war again, and create extraordinary prosperity for their people. Not just rebuilding the country, but also ushering in an era of extraordinary economic progress. This is not just about peace agreements. It's about creating a path forward that leaves Ukraine sovereign, independent, and prosperous. We look forward to making even more progress today ," Rubio said.
On the other hand, Ukraine's security chief, Rustem Umerov, said the delegation was working to ensure real peace for Ukraine. He also thanked Donald Trump's "peace initiative" and said he was grateful to the US president's team.
" We are discussing the future of Ukraine, the security of Ukraine, the non-repetition of aggression against Ukraine, the prosperity of Ukraine, how to rebuild Ukraine. We are grateful for the efforts of the United States and its team to help us. The United States is listening to us, the United States is supporting us, the United States is walking alongside us, and we are grateful for everything that has been done ," he said.
Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, were also present at the talks, which are taking place at a private club near Miami.
