US President Donald Trump said that Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked his wife, Melania Trump, for her "commitment to the cause of children" during a recent phone call.
In August, the first lady raised the issue of kidnapped Ukrainian children in a letter to the Russian president, which Donald Trump personally delivered during his meeting with Putin in Alaska.
Since the invasion of Ukraine began, thousands of children have been forcibly displaced from their country to Russia. According to a report published by the Humanitarian Research Lab at Yale University, as of June 2025, over 35,000 children have been transferred to more than 100 locations in Russia and the occupied territories.
In 2023, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin, accusing him of direct responsibility for war crimes, including the abduction and deportation of Ukrainian children.
Speaking last week from the White House, Melania Trump confirmed that she had received a response from Putin and that an "open channel of communication" had been established between them regarding the well-being of children involved in the conflict.
"We have agreed to cooperate for the good of all people involved in this war," she said.
