After two months of "silence," President Trump said he was having a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a post on his Truth Social platform, the US president stated that the call was ongoing and that the details of the conversation would be shared with the world after the call was concluded.
" The conversation is ongoing, it is long, and I will report the content, as will President Putin, at its conclusion ," Trump wrote.
The conversation comes a day before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is due to visit Washington, where he is expected to push for the transfer of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Kiev. The move has been met with hostility from Moscow, which has threatened retaliation if the US approves.
Despite it being just under an hour since Trump said he was on the phone with Russian President Putin for a "long conversation," there has been no update on when it will end.
The two leaders have not spoken since a phone call on August 18, which preceded their hastily arranged bilateral summit in Alaska three days earlier. Trump has had several lengthy phone calls with Putin since returning to the White House in January.
The pair spoke for 90 minutes in February about peace in Ukraine, the Middle East and energy. Another call in March lasted two hours and led to Putin agreeing to halt attacks on Ukrainian energy targets for 30 days.
They also discussed the growing cooperation between the US and Russian embassies and the Iranian nuclear issue in June.
In July, Trump said he had "made no progress" with Putin after a phone call regarding Ukraine.
"I am very disappointed by my conversation with President Putin; I don't think he wants to end the conflict," he told reporters.
