US President Donald Trump has unveiled an ambitious project for the US capital: the construction of a large monument called "L'Arc de Trump", a modern version of the famous "Arc de Triomphe" in Paris.
The monument aims to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026 and will be built near the Memorial Bridge on the Virginia side, directly across from the Lincoln Memorial and near Arlington National Cemetery.
The project was unveiled last night at a lavish dinner at the White House, attended by billionaires and tech executives who have contributed to Trump's campaigns. According to sources present, the president showed three models of the monument's architecture and chose the largest version, with a golden statue on top called "Lady Liberty."
The project's lead architect is Nicolas Leo Charbonneau of the Harrison Design firm, who has previously worked on classic designs for federal buildings.
"L'Arc de Trump will be a triumphal arch for our capital, a symbol of American greatness that will attract millions of visitors from around the world," Trump declared during the evening, emphasizing that this is part of a broader plan to restore the classical Greco-Roman style to Washington's federal architecture.
He promised that the monument would be entirely privately funded, without a penny from the federal budget, relying on his wealthy donors. During the same event, Trump also announced the construction of a new ballroom at the White House, at an estimated cost of about $250 million.
The hall, called the Trump Ballroom, will be used for official events and will be equipped with modern technology, also funded by private donors. Critics have called the project “an unnecessary luxury addition,” but Trump defended it, saying “America deserves the best.”
If realized, “L'Arc de Trump” is expected to become one of Washington's newest symbols, drawing comparisons to historic monuments such as the Washington Obelisk or the Jefferson Memorial. The project has sparked immediate debate: supporters see it as a celebration of American heritage, while opponents accuse it of narcissism and excessive spending at a time when the country is facing economic challenges.
Washington city authorities and Congress are expected to review construction permits in the coming weeks, while Trump has promised that work will begin as soon as possible to meet the 2026 deadline.
