"Beaufort is a symbol of division," Netanyahu's statement sparks

The return of the Israeli army to the historic Beaufort Castle, in southern Lebanon, has sparked debate in Israel regarding the effectiveness of this strategy and its long-term cost.

During a statement on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described Beaufort as a symbol of the heroism of Israeli soldiers, but also as a reminder of the deep divisions that have accompanied the conflict over the years.

"Beaufort Castle is a symbol of a heroic battle for our warriors, but it also symbolizes the deep divide between us ," Netanyahu said.

However, not everyone sees the military's return to this strategic area positively. Orna Mizrahi, a former deputy director of Israel's National Security Council, told the Associated Press that the situation creates the impression that Israel is returning to the same dilemmas of the past.

"There's a feeling like we're going down the same path again. A lot of people ask, 'What for?'" she said.

According to Mizrahi, Beaufort remains a dual symbol for Israel. On the one hand, it represents the military success of the fort's capture in 1982, but on the other, it recalls the losses and high cost of holding it until the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000.

The expert believes that Israel is likely to relinquish control of the fortress in the future, despite statements by Defense Minister Israel Katz, who has expressed the intention for the area to remain a permanent part of Israel's security belt in southern Lebanon.

Mizrahi argues that military operations, while they may weaken Hezbollah, do not offer a long-term solution.

"Yes, we are hitting them through military operations, but in parallel we must also seek a political and diplomatic solution," she stressed.

The debate comes at a time when tensions on the Israel-Lebanon border remain high and concerns about a further escalation of the conflict continue to be present.
