The United States (US) is carefully considering whether the recent behavior of the leader of the Union of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD), Milorad Dodik, crosses the threshold for him to be included again on the list of sanctioned persons, the US Embassy in Sarajevo told the Sarajevo-based portal Klix (Klix.ba).
"The United States continues to monitor the behavior of all actors and parties, including former President of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, and reserves the right to impose sanctions on individuals when necessary, in accordance with executive orders and laws, when they engage in actions that undermine stability and increase tensions," the Embassy's response said.
They recalled that Dodik and other RS officials were under attack by US sanctions due to "destabilizing activities" and that they were removed from the US "blacklist" in October 2025, following concrete steps taken by RS to reduce tensions and repeal the unconstitutional laws that caused the sanctions.
They added that the sanctions against Dodik were lifted because “by submitting his resignation as president of RS and allowing the election of his successor to take place, he acted in accordance with the ruling of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which prohibits him from holding public office.”
Recently, Dodik has repeatedly denied the viability of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina and has declared the secession of RS.
The US Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina said that they expect the election of a high international representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina as early as June, but also that they are monitoring all political representatives and parties in Bosnia and Herzegovina for any destabilizing effects.
“ The United States recognizes (outgoing High Representative) Kristijan Šmit for his years of dedicated service in BiH, as the second longest-serving High Representative since the creation of this position ,” they stated in their response to the Sarajevo portal.
They stressed that they expect the election of Schmidt's successor at the Peace Implementation Council (PIC) meeting on June 3rd and 4th, and that the new high representative will take office in June.
