EU welcomes US-Iran deal: Ready to contribute to long-term peace

The President of the European Council states that the EU is ready to contribute to a strategy for long-term peace, while the details of the agreement still remain unclear...

The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, welcomed on Monday the agreement reached between the United States and Iran to end the war in the Middle East, stressing that the European Union is ready to contribute to a strategy aimed at "lasting peace."

"I look forward to the end of this costly war and the full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz," Costa wrote on the X platform.

According to Agence France-Presse (AFP) reporting, the US and Iran announced that they have reached an agreement to end the conflict on all fronts in the Middle East, including Lebanon, as well as to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a sea route of strategic importance for global trade.

However, the parties provided little information regarding one of the most sensitive issues of the negotiations: Iran's nuclear program.

Washington and Islamabad said the agreement was expected to be signed on Friday in Switzerland. Its content remains unclear, after weeks of difficult negotiations and repeated warnings from US President Donald Trump about the possibility of resuming hostilities if a deal with Tehran was not reached.

Iran's Mehr news agency reported that the US will release $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets before the start of negotiations. According to it, a 14-point memorandum of understanding envisages the release of $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets during a 60-day negotiation period, which begins after the document is signed.

The Trump administration did not immediately comment on the reported details of the deal. The issue could prove contentious as the United States continues efforts to limit Iran's nuclear ambitions and address its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, which is believed to have been damaged or buried after US strikes last year.

In an interview with The New York Times on Sunday, President Trump stated that Washington and Tehran are still negotiating the possibility of Iran suspending its uranium enrichment activities for a period of 20 years.
