Historic agreement between the US and Iran, Trump announces the end of the naval blockade; Tehran confirms the memorandum and the ceasefire
A development of extraordinary importance in the Middle East appears to have taken shape this Sunday, as the United States and Iran reached a preliminary agreement aimed at ending the conflict and paving the way for further negotiations.
US President Donald Trump announced that the agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran has been completed, stating that the US will immediately lift the naval blockade of Iranian ports and authorize the free reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most strategic oil transportation arteries in the world.
" The signing of the deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran has now been completed. Congratulations to all !" Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform, adding: " Ships of the world, start your engines. Let the oil flow !"
A little later, confirmation came from Tehran. Iranian Deputy Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, told state media that the text of the memorandum of understanding with the US has been finalized and that the official signing ceremony will take place on Friday in Switzerland.
According to him, the commitments of both parties will enter into force starting Friday, while two main measures will be implemented immediately: the immediate and permanent end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, as well as the lifting and termination of the US naval blockade of Iran.
Gharibabadi also stressed that the memorandum is not only the result of diplomatic efforts, but also of what he described as Iran's "military achievements" during the conflict.
Pakistan, which has played a key role as a mediator during the negotiations, has announced that the official signing ceremony will take place on Friday in Geneva.
US Vice President JD Vance stated that he plans to attend the ceremony, while the possibility that Donald Trump himself will be present is not ruled out, although for security reasons a final decision has not yet been made.
Sources close to the US administration indicate that Trump had requested that the agreement be reached before the start of the G7 summit in France, where the US-Iran conflict and its impact on global energy markets are expected to be among the main topics of discussion.
What does the agreement provide?
Although full details have not yet been made public, the memorandum is expected to serve as the basis for a 60-day period of intensive negotiations, with the objective of ending the war and reaching a broader political and security agreement.
However, American and Iranian officials have so far given not entirely identical messages on the content of the document, hinting that some points still remain the subject of discussion.
The US naval blockade was imposed in mid-April, a few weeks after the start of the conflict, as part of the escalation of economic pressure on Tehran.
Its aim was to stop ships deemed "non-compliant" and limit Iran's income from energy exports, while during this period the US had deployed two aircraft carriers and more than a dozen naval destroyers to the region.
Although Trump has authorized the free reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the full return of maritime traffic to pre-conflict levels is expected to take time, as Iran has maintained its restrictions and, according to US authorities, naval mines have also been placed in the area.
If the memorandum is signed as planned on Friday and the parties' commitments are implemented, it would constitute one of the most significant diplomatic turning points in US-Iran relations and a development with a direct impact on regional stability and global energy markets.
