Vladimir Putin appears to have lost a strategic ally, India.
India intends to stop importing oil from Russia, according to US President Donald Trump. Trump made the announcement at the White House, according to dpa.
The US has long called for a ban on oil imports because of the war in Ukraine. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured him "that no oil will be bought from Russia," Trump said.
"You can't do this right away. It's a bit of a long process, but the process will be over soon."
There has been no official confirmation of the news from India yet.
Since late August, Donald Trump has imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on India, on top of the 25 percent already in place. The move was intended to discourage India from further importing oil from Russia. Russia is the world's second-largest oil exporter, and President Vladimir Putin is using the revenue to help finance the war in Ukraine.
Trump has long called for Putin's allies China and India to stop oil imports. Several EU countries also import oil and gas from Russia, and Trump also called for a ban on imports from them in September.
"Europe needs to step up its game," he told the UN General Assembly in New York. "Otherwise, we are all losing a lot of time."
In recent weeks, Trump has again appeared more conciliatory towards India. He announced his intention to restart talks on trade relations between the two countries. On Wednesday (October 15), Trump described Modi as a "very good friend." Modi is "a great man," the US president said, adding, "He loves Trump."
