The biggest enemy of young people: Artificial Intelligence!

Many young people, despite their use of it, see AI as damaging to their creativity and their ability to think critically...

Young Americans are speaking out against artificial intelligence because it is stealing their future. Polls have long shown a growing discontent among young Americans with artificial intelligence (AI). This concern became apparent a few days ago when end-of-year speeches by technology leaders at universities in Florida, Tennessee and Arizona, which urged recent graduates to prepare for the new AI-based era, were interrupted by an avalanche of boos. Now the issue has exploded. And, looking closely at the numbers, it is striking that older adults, the baby boomers, are more open to AI than their children and grandchildren. It had always been the other way around with digital technology: with video games, personal computers, social networks, smartphones, children were the first to arrive and get excited. Their parents didn’t understand and backed off.

It also happened with ChatGPT: when it came out, it took adults a while to understand it, while Generation Z was using it massively in schools, all over the world, within a month.

What's going on? Part of this has to do with the psychology of intergenerational relationships: video games and social media abuse were once offenses, forbidden fruit. Now, however, the use of AI is encouraged in American schools, but within regulated limits.

There's more: surveys show that many young people, despite using it, see AI as damaging to their creativity and their ability to think critically. And many of them are already experiencing the negative impact of AI in their workplace firsthand. We're not facing the dreaded mass layoffs, but in many professions, such as law or administration, technology from OpenAI, Google or Anthropic is eliminating entry-level jobs: the first job for those starting out with less complex tasks. Intelligent machines perform them at almost zero cost.

So, while the pragmatic elderly accept what seems inevitable to them, there are young people who are trying to rebel. In the UK, movements like Pause AI and Pull the Plug are emerging to question the use of AI, while the acronym FOBO is gaining popularity: translated, it stands for "fear of being obsolete". Technology accelerators dismiss them as neo-Luddites or even cavemen. But awareness of the dangers of uncontrolled AI, concentrated in a few hands and managed with productivity in mind, is spreading and finds strong echoes even in Pope Leo's encyclical.
