Iran has categorically denied any involvement in the explosion that caused a fire aboard a South Korean cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz this week.
The incident occurred on Monday when flames erupted in the engine room of the Panamanian-flagged ship, which was carrying 24 crew members, including six Korean nationals. South Korea's Foreign Ministry said the cause of the incident remained unclear and was under investigation.
US President Donald Trump claimed that Iran had attacked the ship, as well as other targets in the Strait of Hormuz. However, the Iranian embassy in Seoul responded by calling the accusations baseless.
In the official statement, the embassy said that Iran "strongly rejects and categorically denies any accusations" of involvement in the incident.
Tehran also stressed that, following what it calls aggressive actions by the US and Israel, the Strait of Hormuz is now considered an essential part of Iran's "defensive geography".
According to Iranian authorities, security protocols on this strategic sea route have been strengthened due to high tensions in the region and the presence of "hostile forces and their allies."
