A train collided with a school minibus in Buggenhout, Belgium, on Tuesday morning, May 26, causing four fatalities and several serious injuries.
According to Belgian media and the AP agency, the victims include two students, the driver of the minibus and an adult accompanying the children. There were nine people in the vehicle, including seven children, while about 100 to 150 passengers were traveling on the train. There were no reports of injuries on the train.
Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin expressed condolences to the victims and their families, calling the incident a tragic accident.
According to Infrabel, the Belgian rail infrastructure company, the collision occurred at around 08:08. Camera footage shows that the level crossing barriers were down and the signals were red at the time of the accident. The causes remain under investigation by police and prosecutors.
The train was traveling from Bruges to Mechelen. Belgian authorities have temporarily suspended rail traffic in the area while investigative teams are verifying the full circumstances of the incident.
