The aftermath of Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica is emerging, with officials saying the death toll is likely to rise.
Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie, during a statement to the media, said he could not provide an immediate update on the death toll, but this information will be released later.
"What I will say is that there have been casualties and, based on our information, there will be more ," he said.
McKenzie stressed that shelters will remain open and dismissed misinformation spread on social media, falsely claiming that shelters will close today.
He says there are 521 shelters in operation, which currently house around 13,000 people.
"The number of people in shelters has decreased over the last day, as some people have been able to return to their homes," he said.
We recall that at least five people died in Jamaica during Hurricane Melissa.
