Kremlin responds to Trump: If US begins nuclear tests, Russia will respond in

The Kremlin has reacted to comments by US President Donald Trump, who yesterday declared that he intends to order new nuclear weapons tests.

Trump's statements, as analysts have noted, lacked important details and confused public opinion, as he conflated nuclear weapons with missiles carrying nuclear warheads.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was asked today whether these comments could mark the start of a new arms race between the US and Russia.

"Not yet," Peskov replied.

He added: “Trump mentioned in his statement that several countries are conducting nuclear tests… If he was referring to the Burevestnik test, then it should be clarified that this is not a nuclear test.”

This statement is related to Russian President Vladimir Putin's announcement this week that Russia has tested a new nuclear-powered missile, the 9M730 Burevestnik (Storm Petrel) model.

Putin described it as “invincible” to any existing or future missile defenses, with an almost unlimited range and unpredictable trajectory. According to him, the missile traveled 14,000 kilometers and stayed in the air for about 15 hours.

However, Peskov accompanied his clarification with a warning to Washington: if the US violates the international agreement banning nuclear tests, Moscow will respond in kind. “The United States is a sovereign country and has the right to make sovereign decisions,” Peskov stressed. “But I want to recall President Putin’s repeated position: if someone violates the moratorium, Russia will react in kind,” he said.
