European report warns of the country's energy weakness and the risk of dependence in the event of a crisis...

A European report on the energy capacities of the continent's countries ranks Albania among the countries with the lowest oil reserves, only about 15 days, while the European average is about 120 days. The situation has raised serious concerns about the country's energy security in the event of international crises or conflict. NATO has asked the Albanian government to set up a crisis headquarters and create strategic emergency deposits, while experts warn that in a blockade situation Albania could remain dependent on external supplies.

Albania today is one of the most fragile countries not only in Europe, but also in the region. Because we are the only country where the government has not thought about tomorrow. A European document emphasizes that Albania is the most problematic country on the continent in dealing with the conflict in Iran.

This is according to a prestigious Brussels organization that measures the energy capacities of European countries. Albania is the country with the most fragile European oil reserves, with only 15 days, while the average European energy reserve is 120 days. Italy, which is one of the most problematic countries in the strategic reserve, has 80 days.

According to the European report, this is not an economic issue or a problem of private hydrocarbon trading operators, but of the irresponsibility of a state that does not think about its reserves in problematic cases.

Where war is the climax. Albania during the regime of Enver Hoxha had energy reserves in secret and mountainous places, precisely to save them for a bad day. It has even been estimated that Hoxha's Albania, with its Spartan organization, could survive two more years of war with energy deposits.

Today, Albania has less than 15 days of reserves and every morning on the oil and its by-products sales charts, the price increases by 20 cents.

This poses a major problem, not simply in the logic of speculation, but in the fact that the government does not have a plan for how it will manage the country in a blockade or an oil price crisis.

Serbia, North Macedonia and Montenegro have reserves that could extend it by at least two months in the event of a blockade, while Greece and Croatia go even further.

A week ago, NATO asked Albania to form a crisis headquarters to create an emergency energy reserve, which has begun to be assembled with bureaucratic steps. There have been generals of the Alliance who have strongly criticized the Albanian government and military for the fact that they could leave the country in such a situation, where not only the military infrastructure, but also the energy supply could become a serious emergency.

A large delegation from the NATO Supreme Command is expected to arrive in Tirana this weekend, and is expected to provide detailed instructions on what is standard protocol in the West: strategic energy deposits.

However, this issue is not simply ignorance on the part of national security specialists. Albania during the communist era, although closed and backward, had long-term energy reserves. An American logistics general who monitored this system in the early 1990s called it a wonderful organization, which could keep the country at war for up to five years.

In an energy crisis situation, Albania would be almost totally dependent on Greece, which is the country with the most powerful merchant fleet in the world and with significant energy reserves. Meanwhile, Italy has a deficit in this regard.

In this logic, in a time of war or crisis, we would be at the mercy of Athens, something that was also proven in the 1990s, when Greek tankers supplied energy reserves in Durrës.

The question that arises is whether this situation could once again create an energy dependence on Greece, as is currently the case in North Macedonia. /Pamphlet
