The court hearing on the case of former President of the Republic, Ilir Meta, has been postponed. The reason is the change of Ema Çoku's defense lawyer. The court has decided that the next hearing will take place on January 12, at 2:30 p.m.
His lawyer, Kujtim Cakrani, stated that the postponement was due to problems identified during the defendant's review of procedural documents. He also said that tomorrow, December 23, they will address the Constitutional Court with additional evidence for their request for Meta's release from prison.
" In reading the documents, Mr. Meta found that the request for the transfer to trial was drafted differently and the evidence that is recorded there is not marked, physically recorded. This caused today's session to have this kind of complexity between Mr. Meta and the prosecutors. The prosecutors write differently in the request and what they present does not have physical evidence to present to the court.
This is what we have concluded and we are already waiting for the hearing to take place, believe that this matter will end as all other politically-rigged matters have ended. I say this based on all the evidence we have. Tomorrow we will present to the Constitutional Court, at their request, some additional evidence, which is also the latest report of the Ombudsman, which has concluded that political persecution is being used against Meta and we will make it available to the Constitutional Court tomorrow, and we believe that within this year it will be expressed, because the matter is for trial , "said Cakrani.
Meanwhile, we recall that Ilir Meta continues to be held in detention since October 21, 2024, after being accused by SPAK of committing three criminal offenses: "passive corruption", "money laundering" and "hiding assets".
On July 28, SPAK closed the investigations against Meta, while at the end of August the file was sent for trial to the Special Court, including the CEZ-DIA affair, LSI lobbying in the United States of America, and the property investigation. Currently, the case is still in the preliminary hearing phase.
The decision on whether or not the case will go to trial will be made by Judge Irena Gjoka. His ex-wife, Monika Kryemadhi, and three other people face the same charges as Ilir Meta; Pirro Xhixho, accused of passive corruption of high-ranking officials committed in collaboration, and Fatime Kryemadhi and Ema Çoku, accused of money laundering.
