"Priest, cover for money", Karamuço gives details of

Criminalistics expert Ervin Karamuço has revealed new details about the joint operation between SPAK and Italian authorities, which led to the crackdown on an Italian-Albanian criminal group involved in drug trafficking and money laundering.

Invited to the show "Now with Erla Mëhillin", Karamuço stated that the group had built a sophisticated scheme to hide the circulation of dirty money, using a priest and the facade of charity.

"Before the murder took place, they had built a very sophisticated camouflage. They had found a priest to cover all the financial channels of money laundering with a charity veil," Karamuço declared.

According to him, the priest was used as a front for the circulation of money not only of this group, but also of other criminal organizations.

"It wasn't just the money of this group, but also of several other criminal organizations. Through this channel, it came to Albania and was disguised as charitable activities or legitimate investments," he said.

Karamuço explained that the group was not considered one of the most powerful in international drug trafficking, but it came under the radar of Italian anti-mafia after a mafia-style murder. "For reasons of sedition and disobedience, a distributor who was also a hairdresser was executed," he said.

According to the expert, the manner of execution led to the case being passed into the hands of the Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office in Italy, which then uncovered the group's financial activity.

"But everything changed when the murder happened, which was mafia-style, and that's why they put in place wiretapping. They have very advanced and sophisticated systems, in which they have invested enormously, and practically nothing escapes their communications," Karamuço added.

He also praised the cooperation between Italian authorities and SPAK, citing prosecutor Vladimir Mara as a key part of the joint investigative team.

"Then, the Italians knocked on SPAK, on prosecutor Vladimir Mara, as part of the joint team, to verify and track the movements of money," the expert continued.

The operation is related to the investigation of the murder of Francesco Divisti, an event that occurred on April 25, 2025 in Canosa di Puglia, as well as the activity of a criminal organization based in Tirana.

According to Italian authorities, the victim was initially involved in a conflict in a bar in Barletta and then transported to an isolated area in Murgia, where he was executed by gunfire. His body was then burned to cover up the crime.

As part of the investigations, 15 security measures have been issued against 11 Albanian citizens and 4 Italians, while the investigations are expected to expand further.
