Journalist Artan Hoxha, invited to Euronews Albania, has revealed new details regarding the latest EUROPOL report on the cooperation of Albanian criminal groups with the Ecuadorian cartel "Los Lobos" for international cocaine trafficking through fruit transport companies.
Hoxha explains that the largest criminal organization in Ecuador is “Los Choneros” with around 20,000 members, while “Los Lobos” is their main rival with around 8,000 members. According to him, these groups do not have a true cartel structure like the Colombians or Mexicans, but function more like alliances.
Among other things, he stressed that Albanian groups there are forced to choose sides, either working with one organization or the other. He added that if the local partner is killed, the Albanians must leave immediately to avoid being targeted by rivals as cartel financiers.
"Ecuadorian groups are more interested in internal trafficking, what is called microtrafficking there. Because Ecuador, not being a producing country, is a transit country. It does not produce cocaine and is dependent on the cartels, on the Colombians.
For example, the war and the armed conflict that started between the state and Los Choneros, which is the largest organization, started because the Mexicans or the Mexican cartels were interested in a confrontation there. And the more insecure Ecuador is, the easier it is for them to get the drug shipments and possibly get them cheaper.
