The KLP has announced that it will open the competition for the new Prosecutor General. In an official announcement, the KLP announces that on Tuesday, June 30, the competition for the new head of the General Prosecutor's Office will open, thus also opening applications to run for this position.
The Council verifies the legal criteria, wealth, clean image and professional integrity of the candidates. The KLP then selects and ranks the 3 most highly rated candidates, while the list of ranked names together with the respective ratings is sent to the Assembly. The winning candidate must receive a minimum of 84 votes. If no candidate receives 84 votes within 30 days, the candidate ranked first by the KLP is automatically declared appointed.
Olsian Çela does not have the right to run for re-election, as this is also stipulated in the Constitution. Çela was elected Prosecutor General on December 5, 2019 with 101 votes in favor in the Albanian Parliament, while he was also ranked first in the assessment made by the KLP at the time. Çela replaced Arta Marku in this position, whose election by the Parliament was contested by the opposition, but not only.

The Prosecutor General is elected by 3/5 of the members of the Assembly, among 3 candidates proposed by the High Prosecutorial Council, for a 7-year mandate and without the right to reappointment.
The Prosecutor General is appointed in accordance with Article 148/a of the Constitution.
The Prosecutor General represents the accusation in the High Court and the cases in the Constitutional Court, except in the case when the representation is made by the Special Prosecution Office.
The Prosecutor General issues general instructions for prosecutors of general jurisdiction prosecution offices and Judicial Police officers and supervises their implementation, reports to the Parliament on the state of crime in the country, requests the High Inspector of Justice to conduct thematic inspections or investigations into individual violations, administers the wiretapping system and exercises other powers under Article 38 of Law No. 97/2016 “On the organization and functioning of the prosecution in the Republic of Albania”.
