On the occasion of the canonization of Mother Teresa, the online Archive Fund of the Albanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs published documents, writings and letters of the Albanian saint, who requested to visit the graves of her mother and sister who rested in her homeland.
Mother Teresa was not allowed by the regime to attend their funeral ceremonies, but in 1985, things began to change in Albania. According to documents from the time, the first request was forwarded to the Albanian embassy in Rome, led by the League of Arbëresh Writers and Artists.
In the documents, her response in the interview given to Albanian state television stands out. Usually only positive assessments were heard. But when asked about her impressions from her first visit to Albania, Mother Teresa would answer: "I did not know what Albania was like before and I am not able to make a comparison and give any impression."
After leaving Albania, Mother Teresa wrote a letter to President Ramiz Alia asking for permission to open a house in Tirana for her Missionaries of Charity... the response was long delayed.
The visits of Mother Teresa's Missionaries who were waiting in Rome, but also of Mother Teresa herself, continued at the Albanian embassy in Rome in the following months to receive a response from the Albanian side.
Also in October 1990, in Tirana, the kindergarten visited by the Albanian Nobel laureate during her first visit there was named "Mother Teresa Kindergarten".
During this period, there were new political developments in Albania, and there was official talk about the freedom to practice religion and the activity of religious institutions.
These circumstances also facilitated the opening of Mother Teresa's Mission in Albania. The response from the Albanian state came in November 1990, Mother Teresa was welcomed for a second visit to Albania, while for the activity of the Missionary Sisters of Charity in Albania, the legislation had to be changed first.
The second visit took place from December 1-5, 1990.
The houses of Mother Teresa's Mission of Charity in Albania would begin their activity in March 1991 in Tirana and Shkodra.
