A shipment of food products transported from Albania has been blocked by Maltese authorities and ordered to be destroyed, after violations of food safety rules were found during inspections.
According to the Malta Food Safety and Security Authority (FSSA), the shipment arrived on the island in a van via ferry from Sicily, having travelled from Albania.
The checks revealed irregularities in several product categories, including meat, yogurt, cheese, eggs, olive oil, beans, packaged foods, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, salt and juices.
Authorities announced that some of the goods were not transported at the required temperatures, while some other products were not accompanied by the necessary labeling and documentation for their traceability.
Due to these violations, the FSSA decided to seal the entire shipment and order its destruction, arguing that the measure is necessary to protect public health and the food industry in Malta.
The Maltese authority also announced that it had not received the mandatory notification of the arrival of the shipment. According to the legislation in force, importers must inform the authorities at least 48 hours before the entry into the country of food products, animals, feed or plants.
So far, authorities have not disclosed the amount of products seized.
