The Prison Police officer accused of giving a mobile phone to Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj during his transfer to pre-trial detention has been released this Monday, June 15. Although SPAK had requested his sentence of 5 years in prison, due to the shortened trial the measure was reduced to 3 years and 4 months in prison, while the Special Prosecution Office requested the suspension of the execution of the sentence and his placement on probation.
We recall that during interrogation, the prison officer admitted that he had given the phone to Veliaj, stating that he had acted out of fear. It is suspected that the incident occurred in the days before the mayor was transferred to the cell.
We recall that on March 13, the Special Court of Appeals rejected Erion Veliaj's request for release on bail, leaving in effect the security measure of "prison arrest." According to SPAK, Veliaj is suspected of having directly or through his family members received payments and other benefits from various businessmen on at least nine occasions.
