Enzo Maresca, the new manager of Manchester City

It's official. Enzo Maresca is the new manager of Manchester City. The English club announced on Monday that the Italian has signed a contract until 2029, taking over the reins of the team after the departure of Pep Guardiola, who ended a trophy-laden 10-year reign at the Etihad.

For Maresca this is his third adventure at Manchester City, this time as head coach. The Italian returns to the club after gaining experience on the benches of other teams and will now have the task of continuing the successes of the "Citizens".

" Manchester City is a club that I know very well and now that I have the chance to manage this team it is a great opportunity for me. Everything here is innovative, planned and with a clear vision. I know the club, I know what is required and I can't wait to start working with the players. I want to win, play beautiful football and enjoy the responsibility of managing Manchester City ," Maresca declared after signing.

Even the club's president, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, expressed his belief that the Italian is the ideal choice for City's bench.

" Enzo has always shown that he seeks to challenge himself and achieve success. He brings personality, passion and intelligence, qualities that are fully compatible with the philosophy of Manchester City ," said Al Mubarak.

Meanwhile, Maresca's appointment was met with a strong reaction from Chelsea, the Italian coach's former club. In an official statement, the Londoners, without ever mentioning him by name, revealed that they had been informed since the autumn of last year that the technician intended to succeed Guardiola at the end of the season.

According to Chelsea, in December 2025 the coach unexpectedly resigned, creating great disappointment within the club.

" We felt betrayed because it was hard to believe that his mind and heart were with another club, even though he had only joined Chelsea a year earlier. To protect the players, fans and the identity of the club, we had no choice but to accept his resignation ," the statement said.

Chelsea also confirmed that an agreement has been reached with Manchester City for a £17m release clause for Maresca. The London club said a confidential agreement has also been signed with the manager himself, who will also pay a fee.

At the end of the reaction, Chelsea expressed confidence in the new coach, Xabi Alonso, describing him as the right man to return the club to success and stability in the coming seasons.
