In 2017, Çëndrim Kameraj arrived at Juventus full of hope, at the age of 18 and eager to shine in a champion team. Eight years later, the situation is completely different, he has gone through difficult times, had to face disappointment and accept the reality of his new life, which has not led him to play on the most prestigious fields in the world.
The former Juventus player was forced to retire after a series of injuries and three cruciate ligament ruptures affected his career and he ended up working on a construction site.
In an interview with '20min.ch', the Albanian born in Lucerne spoke about the difficulties he faced and all the mental consequences he endured. He trained with Cristiano Ronaldo and Higuain, but could not follow that dream. His career was so bleak that he could no longer watch matches on television. At the age of 26, he had to start over, finding a new balance in his life, partly thanks to the love of his family.
As soon as he turned 18, he managed to secure a contract with Juve and trained with the star-studded first team. If you browse his Instagram profile, you can see photos with Cristiano Ronaldo, Higuain and many shots on the pitch wearing the black and white shirt that he wore for two years, until 2019. Then the first rupture of the cruciate ligament hindered his progress, forcing him to take a six-month break that proved fatal to his stay at Juventus.
" I told myself I would come back stronger. I had done everything for football. But there was no more room for him, so he decided to return to Lugano and then to Zurich on loan. On the last day of his trial, he tore his cruciate ligament again, throwing him into despair.
It was very difficult mentally for me. I was at the top, training with the best and then I found myself at the bottom again ...”
Kameraj worked hard during that period and in 2022, he returned to the field for the third time, after changing teams. But just minutes after his debut against Zug 94, the unthinkable happened again, he tore his cruciate ligament for the third time, following a strange warning.
" It took ten seconds for it to tear again. The crazy thing is, the day before, I had a dream that I was going to tear my cruciate ligament again ," he said.
After his latest injury, Kameraj never returned to the field and decided to change his life. He went viral after trending on social media with a photo of himself next to Cristiano Ronaldo, followed by a photo of himself wearing a helmet at a construction site, to demonstrate how quickly life can change.
Today, he works there: " I'm actually a human resources consultant at the construction company ICM Bau AG. Our supervisor wants us all to go to the construction site at least once a day to show us how hard this job is ."
Football has returned to his life and he now coaches FC Ebikon, a small Swiss team that has allowed him to give new shape to his dream and continue his journey in the sport.
