A real revolution is about to engulf the world of Italian refereeing, starting with Serie C. During the AIA's pre-season meeting in Cascia, important innovations were announced, starting with the introduction of "VAR with calls" in the third professional category.
An innovation that promises to change the relationship between referees, coaches and decisions on the field. Daniele Orsato, head of CAN C, highlighted the formative value of this innovation:
" The season will require very prepared referees. We have worked hard these days and I tell my referees not to immediately think about Serie A or B, but to be ready to deserve to get there. Referees must remove the fear of making a mistake. The hope is that we will see fewer protests on the pitch. Coaches, having two opportunities to request video intervention, can get justice in case of mistakes ."
A significant change is also expected in Serie A. As Gianluca Roki, head of CAN A, announced, the referees are preparing to explain VAR decisions directly from the stadiums, in real time: “ We want to increase transparency. The number of referees has been reduced precisely to invest in quality. It is impossible to always have uniform judgments, because each episode is different and each referee is a human being, not a machine .”
During the build-up, Serie A referees are training with loudspeakers on the pitch, simulating game situations and learning to communicate their decisions out loud, even to fans in the stands.
Roki then clarified his stance on another sensitive topic, interviews with referees after matches: " I disagree. After the match they are not sober, it would take at least 12 hours to analyze and explain rationally ."
