George Russell will start the Austrian Formula 1 Grand Prix from pole position after recording the fastest time in Saturday's qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring.

The British Mercedes driver stopped the clock at 1:06.113, a lap that was initially under investigation as it was recorded during the yellow flags. However, the race stewards confirmed the result, awarding Russell pole position for Sunday's race.

The yellow flags were issued after the reigning champion Max Verstappen lost control of his car at the penultimate corner while trying to improve his time, crashing and ending his bid for a front row spot. As a result, the Dutchman will start the race from fifth place.

Ferrari returned to competitive form after a difficult day of free practice. Charles Leclerc secured second place, while his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, finished third, giving the Italian team a very advantageous starting position.

In fourth place was Italian Kimi Antonelli with Mercedes, completing a strong performance by the German team. Behind Verstappen were the two McLaren cars, with Lando Norris ahead of Oskar Piast. The top ten was completed by Isak Hadjar, Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad.

The short track of the "Red Bull Ring" produced minimal differences between the drivers, which promises a balanced race with many overtakings. An important role is expected to play the high temperatures predicted for Sunday, which could significantly affect tire wear and teams' strategies.
