Argentina has closed the group stage of the 2026 World Cup in the best possible way, winning 3-1 against Jordan in the final match of Group J and securing first place with maximum points.
With qualification already secured, coach Lionel Scaloni chose to field a changed lineup, making nine rotations and initially leaving captain Lionel Messi on the bench. Despite the changes, Argentina dominated the match from the first minute.
The score was unlocked in the 19th minute, when Giovani Lo Celso, who replaced Messi in the lineup, scored a spectacular goal from a free kick, with an accurate execution from about 18 meters.
A few minutes later, after a dangerous challenge by Ehsan Haddad on Marcos Senesi, the referee, after consulting the VAR system, awarded a penalty to Argentina. Lautaro Martínez was accurate from the spot, scoring his first goal of this World Cup and sending the score to 2-0 before the break.
In the second half, Jordan responded thanks to tactical changes by coach Jamal Sellami. In the 55th minute, Musa Al-Tamaari took advantage of an assist from Haddad and narrowed the score to 2-1.
After that moment, Scaloni brought on Lionel Messi in the 60th minute, to thunderous applause from the Dallas stadium fans. With this activation, the Argentine captain recorded his 29th appearance in World Cup history.
It was Messi who ended Jordan's hopes. Ten minutes from time, he curled a beautifully executed free kick past goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila to seal a 3-1 victory. It was Messi's 19th goal in World Cup history.
Argentina closes the group stage with three wins in three matches and will face debutants Cape Verde in Miami in the round of 16.
On the other hand, Jordan ends its World Cup adventure with three losses in as many matches. However, the team led by Jamal Sellami leaves the tournament leaving its mark, having managed to find the back of the net in each of the three challenges played.
