The Swiss national team has left for the United States to continue preparations for the World Cup, but without one of its key players. Striker Brel Embolo was unable to travel with the rest of the squad due to problems with authorization to enter American territory.
According to the Swiss Football Association, the player's ESTA electronic document was valid until Tuesday morning, but then US authorities decided to pass it on for further review. As a result, the 29-year-old player remained at the airport while the team traveled to the United States.
Swiss media reports that the situation is linked to a court case from 2018. In 2023, Embolo was found guilty of repeated threats and received a suspended fine. The decision was also confirmed by the appeals court and, after the player decided not to appeal it further to the Federal Court, it became final.
However, Swiss football leaders are optimistic about resolving the situation. In an official statement, the federation said it is in constant contact with the relevant authorities and expects Embolo to receive the green light to travel within the day or join the team the next day.
This is not the first time the striker has traveled to the United States. He was also part of the Swiss national team during friendlies against the USA and Mexico last year.
Currently part of the Rene club in France, Embolo remains one of the most important figures in the Swiss national team, having participated in the last five major international tournaments, including the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. He also comes at a good moment of form, having scored in Switzerland's 4-1 victory over Jordan in a friendly match held on Sunday.
