Italy is ready to turn a new page for its national team, bringing back the spirit and pride of the glory year of 2006. Rino Gattuso is expected to be officially announced as Italy's new coach within the week, with the Italian Football Federation aiming to finalise the deal on Monday, while the public presentation is expected for next weekend.
Sources close to the federation confirm that president Gabriele Gravina has held several direct talks with Gattuso, and that the deal is almost closed, awaiting final ratification.
The new coach's contract will be on the same terms as that of his predecessor Luciano Spalletti - with a salary of up to 2 million euros per year - and will last until the end of the 2026 World Cup, with a clear objective: qualifying Italy for the most important football tournament.
But the innovations don't stop with the name of the coach. The new project includes big names from world champion Italy: Leonardo Bonucci, Andrea Barzagli, Gianluca Zambrotta and Simone Perrotta will be part of the technical staff, bringing the experience and fighting spirit that characterized them as players.
Gianluigi Buffon, already confirmed as the national team's sporting director, will be at the helm of the sporting structure. Meanwhile, former coach Cesare Prandelli will take on a managerial role, focusing on the youth sector and strengthening the link between the academies and the A national team.
The Federation has decided to build a long-term and sustainable vision, where experience, identity and passion will be the cornerstones. The resurgence of Italy passes through a new spirit – with old names who know what it means to wear the “azzurri” jersey.
