After 7 years of investigation, a Florence court has found three doctors guilty in connection with the death of former Fiorentina captain Davide Astori.
The three doctors are charged in connection with the alleged forgery of a medical certificate issued to the former defender.
The former director of sports medicine at Karrexhi, Xhorxho Galanti, was sentenced to one year in prison, while Dr. Loria Tonçeli and Prof. Pietro Amedeo Modesti were sentenced to eight months each, the latter also for destroying an official document.
Initially, a more severe sentence was requested, specifically: three and a half years for Galanti, three years for Tonçeli and one year and four months for Modestin. However, the court imposed lighter measures, not recognizing the aggravating circumstances of the “guarantee certificate”.
According to the investigation, Astor's death was caused by arrhythmogenic ventricular cardiomyopathy, a disease that was not diagnosed in time. Galanti had issued two certificates of fitness for sports activity, neglecting the necessary tests.
Davide Astori died in his hotel on March 4, 2018, just hours before an Italian league match against Udinese.
