
The president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Gabriele Gravina, has officially resigned from his post, following the Italian national team's heavy defeat in Zenica, which cost Italy another World Cup. The decision was made public during a meeting held at the FIGC headquarters in Rome, in the presence of representatives of all the main structures of Italian football.
Gravina considered the resignation a necessary step after the negative result that reinforced the crisis of Italian football on the international stage. Italy risks being left out of the World Cup for the third time in a row, a situation that has increased pressure on the federation's leadership.
He officially informed about his decision before the representatives of: Serie A, Serie B and Serie C, the National Amateur League, the Players' Association, the Coaches' Association, the elections for the new president
Following his resignation, Gravina announced that elections would be held in Rome on June 22 to elect a new FIGC president. He will remain in office until a successor is appointed.
Potential candidates for the position are Giovanni Malago (former president of CONI), Giancarlo Abete (former president of FIGC, 2007–2014), Matteo Marani (President of Lega Pro), Demetrio Albertini (less favored, with support from players)
The election date has been set in accordance with the Federal Statute, so that the new leadership can complete the registration procedures for future professional championships in time.
Gravina is expected to report on April 8 to the Culture, Science and Education Committee of the Chamber of Deputies. He will present an analysis of the state of Italian football, including the strengths of the system, structural problems, issues raised after the match in Zenica and clarification of controversial statements.
During the meeting, Gravina expressed regret for the interpretation of his statements on the difference between amateur and professional sports. He explained that he had no intention of offending any category, the statements are related to changes in regulations and organizational structures. Professional clubs operate according to corporate rules, unlike amateur ones.
