Apologizing and preparing for "trial", Gabriele Gravina resigns as

Gabriele Gravina has officially resigned as president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). The decision, previously announced, was confirmed by him during a meeting held today at the Federation's headquarters in Rome.

According to the FIGC's official announcement, Gravina informed the leaders of the leagues and main Italian football organizations of his departure from the position he had assumed in February 2025. At the same time, he has called the Extraordinary Electoral Assembly, which will be held on June 22 in Rome, to elect the new president.

The election date has been set in accordance with the Federal Statute, in order for the new leadership to have the necessary time to complete the club registration procedures for the next professional season.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the main structures of Italian football, including the directors of Serie A, Serie B, Lega Pro, the National Amateur League, as well as the players' and coaches' associations. Gravina thanked them for their continued support, both publicly and privately.

He also announced that he will appear on April 8 at a hearing before the Committee for Culture, Science and Education in the Chamber of Deputies, where he will report on the current state of Italian football. The report is expected to address both the strengths and problems of the system.

During the meeting, Gravina expressed regret over the interpretation of his recent statements regarding the differences between amateur and professional sports. He clarified that the comments were not intended to offend any sporting discipline, but to highlight the differences in regulations and organizational structure.

According to him, these differences are related both to the internal rules of the federations, as well as to the legal nature of professional clubs, which operate under national and international legislation, unlike amateur clubs.

Gravina's resignation comes at a time when Italian football is facing numerous organizational and financial challenges. The choice of a new leader is expected to be crucial for the future direction of the Federation.
