The Italian Football Federation is preparing for a new phase, as the official departure of current president Gabriele Gravina is expected. While it is still not known who will take over the leadership of the institution, one thing seems clear: the search for the new coach of the Italian national team has entered a concrete phase.
After the possible departure of Gennaro Gattuso, the federation leaders are aiming for a strong name for the bench of the "Blues". Currently, the list of candidates includes four well-known coaches: Antonio Conte, Roberto Mancini, Simone Inzaghi, Massimiliano Allegri, Carlo Ancelotti, Vincenzo Montella and Fabio Cannavaro. However, each name remains conditional on the contractual situation with the respective clubs.
The most "prized" representative is without a doubt Carlo Ancelotti .
The most famous Italian coach, for the first time, chose to sit on the bench of a representative team, on the bench of Brazil. Ancelotti will have on his shoulders not only the country of Brazil, the difficult task of sending the "Selecao" to the top, but at the same time directly represents the Italian school of football. Morocco, Scotland and Haiti are his first three obstacles in the group stage.
Two other Italians, certainly no less famous, are Vincenzo Montella and Fabio Cannavaro. The former led Turkey to a great achievement, returning this country to a World Cup after 24 years. Unfortunately, he achieved this in Pristina, against Kosovo. Montella has a very good group at his disposal, with stars like Guler, Yildiz, Çalhanoglu, etc. In the group stage, he will face the USA, Paraguay and Australia.
Cannavaro will be the first coach to lead Uzbekistan in a World Cup. His team is in a group with Portugal, Colombia and Congo. Of course, in this World Cup, Italy will not only be represented by coaches, but also by referees, on the pitch and in VAR.
Antonio Conte , who previously led Italy to EURO 2016, where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Germany on penalties, is seen as one of the favourites. Currently in charge of Napoli, his return to the national team depends on an agreement with president Aurelio De Laurentiis, as his contract runs until 2027.
Simone Inzaghi , on the other hand, has one more year on his contract with Al Hilal, but his high salary – around 25 million euros per season – poses a serious obstacle to a possible transfer to the national team.
Massimiliano Allegri remains another profile valued by the federation. His organized style and consistent results match the current demands of Italy. However, his situation is linked to his contract with Milan, which runs until 2027, with the possibility of renewal for another season.
Also on the list is Roberto Mancini , who currently manages Al Sadd. He has publicly expressed his desire to return to the Italy bench, with the aim of "atonement" for the sensational elimination against North Macedonia in the past.
Recently, an unexpected name has emerged on the scene: Pep Guardiola . According to reports from "Gazzetta dello Sport", the Catalan coach could leave Manchester City and would have no financial obstacles to take over the Italian team, especially with the support of sponsors.
