In prison for raping an Albanian woman, Robinjo breaks his silence and speaks

Seven months after entering prison, Robinho has spoken publicly for the first time since the start of his sentence in Tremembe Prison Number 2, in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo.

The former Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester City striker is serving a nine-year prison sentence for his part in the gang rape of an Albanian girl in Milan in 2013 — a case that shocked the football world and international public opinion.

Robinho's statements were published in a video distributed by the Taubate Community Council, a non-profit organization founded by judge Sueli Zeraik, which supports the Brazilian judicial system and assists in prisoner reintegration projects.

In the video circulating on social media, Robinho explains that he wants to "set the truth straight" and deny any information about privileged treatment.

" My diet, my sleeping hours... are the same as those of all the other prisoners. I have never eaten different foods, nor have I received special treatment ," Robinjo declares.

During working hours, I do the same thing that all prisoners do. When we want to play football, we are allowed to – usually on Sundays, when there is no work .”

The former footballer categorically denied the news that circulated about "privileged treatment" or a "leadership role" inside the prison: " I have never had special treatment. Visits are on Saturdays or Sundays. When my wife does not come alone, she comes with our children. The eldest son plays, and the two youngest can also come. The visit is the same for everyone, the treatment is the same for everyone. The news that says I am a 'leader' or that I have psychological problems are lies ."

Robinho also dismissed rumors of mental health problems or medication use: " I have never taken medication, thank God. Even though it is difficult to be in prison, I have always remained calm and done everything that any other prisoner can do. The goal here is re-education, re-socialization of those who have made mistakes. I have had no leadership role; here the guards are in command, we prisoners just follow the rules ."

The case of Robinho, the former Brazilian football star, remains one of the most talked-about issues of the decade in Italy and Brazil.

He was finally convicted in January 2022, when the Italian Supreme Court confirmed his nine-year sentence for the gang rape of a 23-year-old Albanian girl in a nightclub in Milan.

After refusing extradition, Robinho was arrested in Brazil in March 2024, following a decision by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to recognize the Italian sentence.

Tremembé II prison, where Robinho is held, is known for housing famous prisoners, such as former politicians or public figures.

Brazilian authorities have stressed that the former player does not enjoy any exemption from the institution's general rules.
