Benfica has officially confirmed that Real Madrid will pay 15 million euros to secure the services of coach Jose Mourinho, in the event that Florentino Pérez is re-elected as president of the Madrid club in the elections scheduled for June 7, 2026.
The announcement comes a day after Perez publicly declared that Mourinho is his choice to coach Los Blancos next term.
In a press release published on Thursday, Benfica clarified that the agreement foresees the full payment of the Portuguese coach's contract termination clause.
" Sport Lisboa and Benfica announce that the candidacy of president Florentino Perez in the Real Madrid elections has expressed its firm intention to take on coach José Mario dos Santos Mourinho Félix if he wins the elections for the presidency of that club, scheduled for June 7, 2026. In this scenario, the contract will be signed for the sum of 15,000,000 euros, which corresponds to the termination clause of the sports employment contract currently in force ," the Portuguese club said in a statement.
According to Benfica, the deal remains conditional on the outcome of Real Madrid's presidential election. If Perez secures a new term at the helm of the Spanish club, Mourinho will be appointed as the new coach of the Madrid team.
The news has sparked huge interest in the football world, as it would mark the Portuguese coach's return to Madrid after more than a decade. Mourinho managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, during which time he won the Spanish league, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
Considered one of the most successful coaches in modern football, Mourinho's return to the Santiago Bernabeu would constitute one of the most important developments in the coaching market for next season.
