In an interview with "The Guardian", former Italy captain and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon commented on the failure of the "azure" team to qualify for the World Cup, calling this a painful moment for the country's football.
" It's a painful page for Italian football and for me. If you had asked me 12 years ago, I would have answered that it would have been easier to see 1,000 aliens around me than Italy out of the World Cup three times in a row. But this is the reality ," Buffon said.
According to him, the decline of Italian football is linked to several main factors. He first mentions the impact of globalization on football, which according to him has increased competition at the international level.
" What are the reasons for the decline of Italian football? I would say there are three main ones: the first is globalization, which has allowed all teams to be competitive, while the middle level has increased significantly ," he stressed.
Buffon also highlights the need for change and deep reflection within the structures of Italian football.
" We need to change. If we analyze the situation clearly, we have the potential to build a better future. But if we deny the problem, it will always remain ," the former goalkeeper added.
Another element he highlights is the loss of the tactical superiority that Italy enjoyed in the past, as well as the lack of players with high creativity.
" Until 15 years ago, when we were winning, we were tactically superior to our opponents. Today we have fantastic players, but what is missing is the real creative talent, like that of Baggio, Del Piero or Totti, who at that time helped us win ," Buffon concluded.
