The German national team in the hands of an Albanian, Shkodran Mustafi takes

Shkodran Mustafi will be the new assistant coach of the German U21 national team, filling the void left by the retirement of Herman Gerland. The 2014 World Cup winner joins a coaching team led by head coach Antonio Di Salvo and assistant coach Ovid Hajou.

Mustafi will join the U21 national team for the first time on September 1. The newly formed team's first call-up period includes the international match against Albania on September 5 and the first qualifying match for the 2027 European Championship in Albania and Serbia against Latvia in Rostock on September 9 (kick-off 20:30).

DFB Sports Director Andreas Rettig said: " During his year with the U-17s, Shkodrani has demonstrated the added value he can bring to the development of young players. He is still very familiar with the players' everyday situations and, thanks to his professional experience in several countries and with the national team, can bring important contributions to the coaching staff. He has represented all national teams since the U-15s, with highlights being the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and reaching the semi-finals of the 2016 European Championship in France. I am delighted that he will now be part of the U-21 coaching team and will contribute to the further development of our young national players ."

U-21 coach Antonio Di Salvo explains: " After the departure of Herman Gerland, we consciously chose a new coach. I am delighted that Shkodrani, not only a good guy but also a very successful former professional, is joining our coaching team. Given his age, he is still very close to the players. With his experience as a player at the highest level, he will bring new perspectives to our work and, as a defensive specialist, will give us a new impetus, both individually and as a team ."

Shkodran Mustafi says: " I am extremely excited, because I followed the European Under-21 Championship closely this summer and felt the euphoria generated in our country by the excellent performances. I want to pass on my experience and knowledge to young professionals on and off the pitch, thus contributing to Toni Di Salvo's coaching team. At the same time, this new role offers me the opportunity to take the next step as a coach. I would like to thank Mark Meister and the entire U-17 team, whose cooperation has given me the perfect start to my coaching career ."

Shkodran Mustafi has been part of the national U-17 team under coach Mark-Patrick Meister since July 2024. He has contributed his experience as a successful professional player in 18 matches so far. After playing for Hamburg and Schalke 04, Mustafi played for Arsenal and Everton in England, Valencia and Levante in Spain, and Sampdoria in Italy. He won the FA Cup twice and the Super Cup once with Arsenal.

Mustafi, who grew up in Bebra, Hesse, is also well-known for the German national team. He played 61 times for the German youth team and won the European Championship with the U-17 team in 2009. He made 20 appearances for the senior team, scoring two goals. Mustafi won the 2014 World Cup with Germany in Brazil, participated in the 2016 European Championship in France and won the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia./ German Football Association / Albanian adaptation, Pamphlet
