PSG will face Tottenham in the 2025 European Super Cup at the Stadio Friuli in Udine this evening. The stadium is home to Udinese and was renovated and completed in 2016 by Florentine architect Marko Kazamonti, who also designed the National Stadium of Tirana and Viola Park in Florence.
Why is the match, scheduled for 21:00, being played at the “Bluenergy” stadium? Why did UEFA decide to host the match between the winners of the Champions League and Europa League at this stadium, which also hosted the finals of the 2019 European Under-21 Championship?
Several factors led to the choice of Udine as the host city for PSG against Tottenham. Firstly, the Italian Football Federation moved very quickly to propose the Stadio Friuli as a possible venue for the European Super Cup.
The choice was then approved, as always, by a vote of the European football body's executive committee.
The desire of the continent's highest football body is for these types of matches to be played in smaller stadiums, to distinguish them from the Champions and Europa League finals.
It is no coincidence that the Super Cup, since moving from its historic home in Monte Carlo, has been played in stadiums such as Prague (2013), Cardiff (2014), Tbilisi (2015), Trondheim (2016), Skopje (2017), Tallinn (2018), Istanbul (2019), Budapest (2020), Belfast (2021), Helsinki (2022), Piraeus (2023) and Warsaw (2024).
The choice of the “Blueenergy” Stadium is the result of an evaluation that recognizes one of the most modern and, above all, ecologically sustainable facilities in Italy. A “green” structure that in 2023 was declared the most eco-sustainable in Europe and the fourth most sustainable in the world. This is an important recognition that recognizes the work carried out over the years.
"Stadio Friuli" is located about 4 kilometers from the center of Udine and was the only Italian stadium nominated for the 2016 Stadium of the Year award, ranking seventh.
The last renovation – of what was previously known as the “Dacia Arena” for sponsorship reasons – dates back to 2016. This gem, owned by Udinese, the team that plays its home games there, has just over 25,000 seats.
