Klaus Gjasula was one of the protagonists of the Albanian National Team in the European Championship, more precisely in the match against Croatia, where he was the only midfielder to get minutes.
But, so little on the field, Gjasula scored an own goal and then the equalizing goal at the end. The 34-year-old, after renewing with Darmstadt, spoke to the media of the German club about the extension of the contract, but also about the emotions of the European, such as the viral video of his brother Jurgen.
Gjasula, you extended the contract with Darmstadt, why did you renew it?
I felt extremely comfortable here the entire time, so I'm glad I was offered the upgrade. Then my age affected, I can't move at this age, but the decisive factor for me was definitely the team and above all the coach, whom I thank for everything. I was coming off an injury and at the end of the season it helped me get back into the game. I don't forget where I come from and where I am, like I said I feel good, my family feels good here and it's an honor for me to be able to continue. Something is happening here, some new arrivals have arrived and I have the feeling that they are hungry and we will try to climb again. Of course it's not always easy after a season like the last one, but I don't want to look too far back, just forward, the boys are hungry.
We won't go back too far, but just a few weeks ago you played Albania in Germany?
It was really hard to recover from injury at this age and it was also extremely cool for me. It was kind of like a fairy tale. It was incredible that I was there and experienced everything. Beautiful and indescribable moments. Of course, it was a very special feeling, in those minutes that I played, there were about 25, the team was in difficulty and they couldn't breathe. At first everything went in the wrong direction, but then with the goal it was fixed.
Did the video of your brother, Jurgen, celebrating with tears in his eyes after the goal go viral?
I've been waiting for this moment all my life. I waited and then when that moment comes these things happen. I can still see the tears coming today, my brother's side isn't like that now, but he obviously has so much emotion. After the game he met me at the stadium and I met him, it was exciting for me and the whole family. Over time, I realized what I had done because everything was very intense, I realized what it meant to be on vacation in Albania after the European Championship. People know you more, it's a privilege to be a National team player, I had never experienced anything like that in my career, it was incredible. I felt like I was a really big boy, and this situation of mine only had one expression as an example: It's never too late to live your dreams.
You played your first professional match at the age of 28?
Of course I would have liked to play more. I have had the opportunity to play football for years, but these times when I was on vacation, I often thought about the fact that I only had 6 years as a professional, really playing in Bundesliga 2 and elite. In these last six years a lot of extreme things have happened which just show me that it's never too late and that anything is possible in football, especially at this time you can achieve anything, you just have to stick with it, believe in yourself and give it all, the rest will come in a moment because I believe that what you give will come back in a moment and yes, this is not only related to the national team, but it is related to my whole career. I think if you are honest and work hard then you will get everything and success will come.
