
Spanish football is in mourning after the tragic news of the passing of Zeben Ramos, the young defender of Las Palmas Atlético, who died as a result of a serious road accident in Gran Canaria.
The 23-year-old was involved in a car crash on June 9 in the Arucas area and remained in a coma for 15 days. Despite the constant efforts of doctors, Ramos did not survive the serious injuries he suffered.
Las Palmas, which was relegated from La Liga this season, released a touching statement and a video in tribute to the late player.
“ UD Las Palmas expresses its deepest regret for the passing of Zebensui Ramos Gonzalez, known in football as Zeben ,” the statement said. “ The Las Palmas C team player, aged 23, did not survive the injuries he sustained in the tragic accident on June 9. ”
Zeben Ramos is described as a left-back, highly adaptable, dedicated and with an exemplary attitude on and off the pitch. Thanks to his hard work, he had also earned the opportunity to train regularly with Las Palmas' reserve team, Las Palmas Atlético.
" The 'Yellows' family is in mourning. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends and teammates. Zeben will remain forever in our hearts ," the statement concluded.
Last season, Ramos was part of a squad that included footballing names such as Adnan Januzaj (formerly of Manchester United), Scott McKenna (formerly of Nottingham Forest), and Ollie McBurnie (formerly of Sheffield United). Las Palmas also had Stefan Bajčetic from Liverpool and Fabio Silva from Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan.
Las Palmas finished the season in 19th place in La Liga and were relegated to the Segunda División. The death of Zeben Ramos has added further sadness to the club and the football community in the Canary Islands.
