Lionel Messi shared an interesting perspective on his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo after helping Inter Miami record their first victory at the Club World Cup, which is currently underway in America. The on-field battle between Messi and Ronaldo has been one of the most iconic and debated rivalries in football history. Spanning more than 15 years, it has shaped the modern era of the sport and has captivated fans, analysts and players alike.
" I have a lot of respect and admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and for the career he has had and continues to have, because he still competes at the highest level. The competition with him was on the field. Each of us wanted to do the best for our team. Of course, as always, everything remained on the field. Off the field, we are two normal people. We are not friends, of course because we don't spend time together, but we have always treated each other with a lot of respect ."
This isn't because of any feud or disagreement between the pair; it's simply because their paths rarely cross. Even when the two were playing in La Liga and regularly competing against each other in Spain, they found themselves on opposite sides of the fierce "El Clasico" divide that exists between longtime rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid. However, things took a major turn after a while, and Ronaldo moved to Saudi Arabia and is playing for Al-Nassr, while Messi is playing in the MLS for Inter Miami.
Messi could have found himself playing in the same tournament as Ronaldo this summer, as Inter Miami compete in the Club World Cup, but CR7 rejected the possibility of linking up with a team taking part in that event in the United States.
