Tom Cruise, one of Hollywood's biggest stars, has never used his real name on stage. The actor was born in 1962 as Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, but decided to drop his family name when he began his acting career at the age of 18.
Although the shorter name suited the world of cinema better, the main reason was personal. Cruise has confessed that the change was a way to break away from his difficult past and especially from his relationship with his father, whom he described as abusive and a "source of chaos."
In an interview with Parade magazine in 2006, the actor said:
"He was that guy who made you feel safe and then... boom! It was a lesson to me: Don't trust him. Be careful."
Cruise's mother divorced his father when he was just 12 years old, while the actor only met his father a decade later, shortly before he passed away.
Interestingly, some family members did not give up their surname. His cousin, actor William Mapother, has kept his full name and is known for his roles in the TV series Lost and the film Zodiac.
Tom Cruise has joined a long list of celebrities who have changed their names for personal or professional reasons, including Shania Twain (Eilleen Regina Edwards), Tina Fey (Elizabeth Stamatina Fey) and Ricky Martin (Enrique Morales).
