It was July 29, 1981, when Princess Diana and Prince Charles married. Even though it's been 44 years since that day, the royal wedding remains one of the most talked-about events in history. The former couple tied the knot at St. Paul's Cathedral in London.
From the different dresses to the wedding day anxiety, below are eight secrets from the royal wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles:
1. Diana lost a lot of weight before the wedding
Due to the stress, Diana lost a significant amount of weight. Stylist Elizabeth Emanuel revealed that she went from a 66-68 cm waist to 58 cm. Diana later admitted that her eating disorder began after Charles made a comment about her body.
2. She spilled perfume on her dress.
While getting ready, Diana accidentally spilled a few drops of perfume on her white dress. Her makeup artist suggested she hold her hand over the stain, pretending to lift the dress so she wouldn't step on it.
3. Her long dress embarrassed her bridesmaids
The back of the dress (the train) was very long and required careful coordination. Diana's petite bridesmaids were simply told, "Do your best," as they tried not to pull it too far and ruin the look.
4. Two bouquets were prepared for the bride
To avoid an incident like at Queen Elizabeth's wedding (where the bouquet was lost), two identical bouquets were prepared for Diana, one to keep, and a spare, in case any problems occurred.
5. Diana got Charles' name wrong during the oath-taking ceremony.
Out of emotion, she mistakenly called him “Philip Charles” instead of “Charles Philip.” With so many royal names, it was a human slip.
6. The dress had a symbol for good luck
Hidden inside the dress was a small 18-karat gold horseshoe, decorated with diamonds, a classic symbol for luck in marriage.
7. They had prepared a special tent in case of rain
If it rained, the designers had created an umbrella decorated with the same lace as the dress. Fortunately, the weather stayed clear.
8. Camilla was on the guest list
Despite her previous relationship with Charles, Camilla attended the wedding due to her husband's official role in the army. Charles is said to have burst into tears the night before the ceremony, still torn between duty and his feelings for Camilla.
